# Remove Pages from PDF: Click the pages you want gone, keep everything else untouched

Drop a PDF into the zone below and **every page appears as a tile you can see and click**. Tap the blank scanner sheets, the duplicate cover page, the internal notes that should never have gone out. Shift-click to mark a whole run at once, or type a page list such as 2, 5-7, 14 - the board and the field stay in step with each other. The pages you keep are copied through without being decoded or recompressed, and nothing is uploaded.

- Files never leave your device
- No installation, no watermark
- Works offline once the page is open

Delete PDF pages, Live

- **Privacy:** 100% private
- **Your plan:** Free to use
- **You get:** Single PDF

Your files are read by JavaScript running on your own machine. There is no upload, no queue, and no copy on our server to delete later.

The tool above needs no explanation. **The guide below covers what happens to the pages you keep** - why deleting a page does not shrink the file the way you expect, what breaks when you remove a page a hyperlink pointed at, how to strip every blank page out of a 400 page scan without checking them one at a time, and the one document type where deleting a page will not delete the information on it.

## How to Delete Pages from a PDF Online for Free

Under a minute for a normal document, nothing to install, and no account for your first run. This **PDF page remover** runs inside the page you are reading, on your own processor.

1. **Drop your PDF into the emerald zone.** Click the drop zone above or drag the file onto this page. Every page is rendered as a tile, in order, numbered by its real position in the file rather than by whatever is printed on the paper.
2. **Click the pages you want to delete.** A marked page turns red and is struck through. **Shift-click a second page to mark the whole run between them**, which is how you delete a 40 page appendix in two clicks rather than forty. Click again to unmark.
3. **Or type the page numbers instead.** The Pages to delete field takes 2, 5-7, 14 and marks exactly those tiles. It works in both directions: clicking updates the field and typing updates the board, so you can type a range and then correct it with a click.
4. **Check the arithmetic, then remove.** The panel on the right shows pages in, pages deleted and pages out. Check that arithmetic. If the numbers are what you expected, press Remove pages, and the document is rebuilt from the pages you kept and downloads immediately.

The bar above the board carries four shortcuts that save a great deal of clicking: *Select odd pages*, *Select even pages*, *Invert* and *Clear selection*. Odd and even are for double-sided scans, and the reason they exist is explained below.

## Deleting Every Blank Page from a Double-Sided Scan

This is the single most common reason anybody searches for how to **remove pages from a PDF**, and it is worth its own section because doing it by hand on a 400 page scan is an afternoon.

A document feeder set to duplex scans both sides of every sheet. When the originals are printed on one side only, you get a 200 page PDF in which every even page is an empty gray rectangle. The pattern is completely regular. That is exactly the kind of work a button should be doing instead of you.

1. Drop the scan in and let the tiles render. Blank backs are instantly recognizable as pale, empty sheets.
2. Press **Select even pages**. Every second page is marked in one click.
3. Scroll the board once and unmark any even page that actually has content on it. On most duplex scans there are two or three: a stamp on the reverse, a handwritten note, a continuation page.
4. Check the readout on the right - it should say roughly half the pages are going - and press Remove pages.

Step three is not optional. No tool should skip it for you, because **automatic blank page detection has to decide how much toner counts as blank**, and a scanner artifact, a page number in the footer or a faint stamp all fall in the gray area. A tool that guesses will one day delete a page with a signature on it and tell you it was empty. Two minutes of scrolling is the price of never having that happen.

**Odd or even depends on where the blanks start.** If page 1 is the first sheet's front, the blanks are the even pages. If the scan begins with a cover sheet or a separator, the pattern shifts by one and you want odd instead, which is the slip that deletes every page carrying content. Look first.

## The Engineering Behind Removing a Page Without Touching the Rest

Deleting a page never means cutting bytes out of the middle of the file. A PDF stores numbered objects, and each page is a small dictionary referencing the content stream, fonts, images and color spaces it needs, where a single object can be referenced by every page in the document. Cut bytes out and the references break.

What actually happens is that a new empty document is created and the pages you kept are copied into it, **with every object they reference followed and copied across as well**. Content streams travel compressed, exactly as they were. Images are never decoded and never re-encoded. A photograph on page 3 of the output is bit-identical to the photograph on page 3 of the input, because it is the same compressed stream moved into a new container.

### Why deleting ten pages does not shrink the file by ten pages

The obvious expectation is that deleting 10 percent of a document removes 10 percent of the bytes. It usually does not, and the mechanism behind that is the whole difference between a tool that failed and a tool doing exactly what it should.

Consider a 20 MB report where a 5 MB embedded font set and a 3 MB letterhead image are shared by every page. Those 8 MB are stored once and referenced 200 times. **Delete 20 pages and the shared 8 MB stays, because the 180 remaining pages still need it.** What you removed is the content streams belonging to those 20 pages, which on a text-heavy report might be 200 KB in total. The file goes from 20 MB to 19.8 MB and everything is working exactly as designed.

The opposite case is a scan, where every page is one large image belonging to that page alone. Remove half the pages and the file really does halve, because nothing was shared in the first place and every page carried its own weight. So read the size change carefully. It tells you what kind of document you have, and nothing at all about whether the deletion worked.

The one thing removal reliably does shrink is the object table, and pages that were the sole user of an image or an embedded subset take that resource with them. If your goal is a smaller file rather than fewer pages, removal is the wrong instrument.

**The pages you keep are not re-rendered, re-flowed or re-compressed.** That is the whole design. A tool that rebuilds pages to make the file smaller will also, sooner or later, change how one of them looks - and you will find out on the copy that is already with the client.

### What breaks when a page disappears

- **Page content:** Untouched. Copied as compressed streams, never decoded.
- **Page order:** Preserved for everything you kept. Removal never reorders.
- **Page size and rotation:** Preserved exactly, including mixed sizes in one document.
- **Internal links:** A link that pointed at a deleted page cannot resolve and is dropped rather than left dangling.
- **Bookmarks:** Not carried across. An outline referring to pages that no longer exist is broken navigation.
- **Form fields:** Fields on kept pages travel with them. Scripts that reference a deleted page will fail.
- **Digital signatures:** Invalidated, as they are by any modification. Nothing can avoid this.
- **Metadata:** Kept by default. Switch the control to Strip all to clear the title, author and creator fields.

## Removing a Page Is Not the Same as Redacting It

This section exists because getting it wrong has consequences that reach a courtroom, and the distinction is not obvious.

Deleting a page removes that page and everything drawn on it. If page 7 held a salary table, page 7 and the salary table are both gone from the output. **That part is genuinely safe**, and it is what most people mean when they ask how to remove sensitive pages from a PDF.

What removal does not do is touch the pages you kept. If the confidential figure also appears in a summary table on page 2, and you delete page 7, the figure is still in the document. This sounds obvious written down and is missed constantly, because people delete the page they were thinking about and stop looking.

The second trap is a document layer. A PDF exported from a design application can carry optional content groups - layers - and a scanned document processed by OCR carries an invisible text layer sitting behind the picture. **Deleting a page removes both, but only for that page.** Text you cannot see on a page you kept is still text, and it is still selectable, searchable and extractable by anybody who opens the file.

**If the objective is that a specific piece of information cannot be recovered, page removal is the wrong tool on its own.** Delete the pages, then search the result for the sensitive term before sending it. Where the information sits inside a page you need to keep, [Redact PDF](https://carthacker.com/pdf-tools/redact-pdf/) is the tool that destroys the underlying content rather than covering it.

One thing this tool does do for you: the black rectangle problem does not arise here. Nothing is drawn over anything. A removed page is not present in the output file in any form, so there is no hidden layer underneath a box, which is the failure mode that has embarrassed several governments.

## The Pages You Delete Never Reach Anybody Else

The pages people delete from a PDF tend to be the interesting ones. Internal margin notes on a quote that is about to go to the customer they describe. A page from a different patient's file. A commercially sensitive annex. The whole point of the operation is that certain content should not be seen by certain people, which makes the choice of tool part of the job rather than a detail.

Uploading that document to a stranger's server to achieve it is a strange way to go about it. So this tool does not. **The file is read by JavaScript on your own machine, restructured in your own memory, and handed back to you as a download.** There is no upload, no processing queue, no temporary copy on a disk in a data center, and no retention window you have to trust somebody about.

Fifteen second proof, requiring no faith at all: load this page, disconnect from the internet entirely, then drop your PDF in and remove the pages. It works. **The only network request a run makes counts the operation against the free allowance**, and it carries the name of the tool and nothing whatsoever about your document.

Consider what a server-side page remover ends up holding. **The complete original document, every page you were deleting precisely because it should not leave your organization, sitting in a temporary directory on hardware you have never seen.** Read that twice. The retention policy for it is one sentence on a web page that you did not write, and here there is no directory at all, because there is no server in the path.

## What This Page Remover Will Not Do

- **It will not detect blank pages for you.** Deciding how much toner counts as blank is a judgment, and a wrong judgment deletes a page with a signature on it. The odd and even shortcuts get you 95 percent of the way in one click, and your eyes do the last 5 percent.
- **It will not find and delete pages by their text.** "Delete every page containing the word Draft" needs a text index and a search interface, which is a different tool.
- **It will not open a password-protected PDF.** Encrypted pages cannot be read. Remove the password with [Unlock PDF](https://carthacker.com/pdf-tools/unlock-pdf/) first, on a document you are authorized to open.
- **It will not delete every page.** A PDF containing no pages is something no reader will open, so the run button stays disabled if the whole board is marked.
- **It will not reorder while it removes.** Pages you keep stay in their original order. To move them as well, use [Organize PDF](https://carthacker.com/pdf-tools/organize-pdf/), which deletes and reorders on the same board.
- **It will not preserve a digital signature.** No tool can. A signature is a statement about one exact sequence of bytes.

On size: the free tiers allow 100 MB per batch and Premium allows 500 MB. Memory is the genuine limit rather than policy, because the source document is held parsed while the output is built alongside it, which puts peak usage at roughly twice the document. Desktops cope. Large scans get tight on an older phone with several tabs already open. **A failed run is refunded**, so a document too large for your device costs nothing to discover.

## Common Problems When Deleting PDF Pages, and the Fix

| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The wrong pages were deleted | The printed page numbers do not match the file's page numbers, which is normal for anything with a cover or contents page. | Use the tiles rather than the printed numbers. The number in the corner of a tile is always the real position in the file. |
| The file is barely any smaller | Fonts and repeated images are shared across pages and stay behind for the pages you kept. | Working as designed. Removal reduces pages, not bytes. Compress the result separately if size is the goal. |
| Links in the document now go nowhere | They pointed at pages that were deleted. | Unavoidable. Broken links are dropped rather than left pointing at the wrong page, which would be worse. |
| Bookmarks have vanished | The outline is dropped deliberately. | Nothing to fix. Half its entries would have pointed at pages that no longer exist. |
| The document will not open at all | It is encrypted, or the file structure is damaged. | Use [Unlock PDF](https://carthacker.com/pdf-tools/unlock-pdf/) for the first, [Repair PDF](https://carthacker.com/pdf-tools/repair-pdf/) for the second. |
| The sensitive figure is still in the file | It also appeared on a page that was kept, or in an invisible OCR text layer. | Search the output before sending it. Use [Redact PDF](https://carthacker.com/pdf-tools/redact-pdf/) where the content sits inside a page you need. |

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I delete pages from a PDF for free?

Drop the PDF into the zone at the top of this page. Every page appears as a tile. Click the ones you want gone, or shift-click to mark a whole run, or type a page list such as 2, 5-7, 14 into the field on the right. The readout shows how many pages go and how many stay, then Remove pages rebuilds the document and downloads it. **No account is needed for your first run**, and there is no watermark.

### Is my PDF uploaded when I remove pages from it?

No. The file is read by JavaScript on your own machine and the new document is built on your own processor. Load this page, disconnect from the internet completely, and it still works, which is the only demonstration of a claim like this one that means anything. **The one request a run makes counts your operation against the free allowance**, and it carries the name of the tool. Nothing else.

### Why is my PDF not much smaller after deleting pages?

Because fonts, logos and other shared resources are stored once and referenced by every page. Deleting 20 pages from a 200 page report removes those pages' content streams, but **the shared 8 MB of fonts and letterhead stays behind for the 180 pages that still need it**. Scans differ. There each page owns its own image, so removing half the pages really does halve the file.

### Does removing pages reduce the quality of the pages I keep?

No. The pages you keep are copied as compressed streams and are never decoded or re-encoded. **Text, vector artwork and images in the output are bit-identical to the original**, and page sizes and rotation are preserved exactly, including documents that mix page sizes.

### How do I delete all the blank pages from a scanned PDF?

Duplex scans of single-sided originals put a blank on every second page. **Press Select even pages to mark all of them in one click**, scroll the board once to unmark the two or three that turned out to have a stamp or a note on the reverse, then remove. There is no automatic blank detection here. That is deliberate. Any threshold tuned to catch a faint scanner artifact will eventually delete a page with a real signature on it.

### Can I delete a range of pages at once?

Yes, in two ways. Click the first page of the range and shift-click the last, which marks everything between them. Or type the range into the Pages to delete field, for example 12-48. **The field and the board stay synchronized in both directions**, so you can type a range, correct it by clicking individual tiles, then read the corrected range straight back out of the field.

### Is deleting a page the same as redacting it?

For that page, yes: a deleted page and everything on it are absent from the output file entirely, with no hidden layer left underneath a black box. But removal does nothing to the pages you keep. If the confidential figure also appears in a summary on another page, or in an invisible OCR text layer on a page you kept, it is still in the document. **Search the output before you send it.**

### Can I remove pages from a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. The pages of an encrypted PDF cannot be read until the password is removed, so the file is reported as locked on its card rather than failing silently halfway through a run. Remove the protection with Unlock PDF first, on a document you are authorized to open, then delete pages from the result.

### What happens to bookmarks and links after I remove pages?

Bookmarks are not carried into the output, because an outline built for the original would point at pages that no longer exist. Internal links that targeted a deleted page are dropped rather than left pointing at whatever page happens to sit in that position now, which would be quietly wrong. **Links between two kept pages still work.**

### Can I remove pages and reorder the rest at the same time?

Not on this tool - pages you keep stay in their original order, which is what most people want and makes the result predictable. Organize PDF does both on the same board: drag pages into a new order, rotate them, and delete the ones you do not want, all in one operation.

### How many pages can I delete at once?

As many as you like, up to one short of the whole document. **The run button stays disabled if every page is marked**, because a PDF containing no pages is not a file that any reader on earth will open. Separate ranges are unlimited.

### Is there a watermark on the finished PDF?

No. The document you download contains the pages you kept and nothing else - no stamp across the page, no logo in a corner, no trial banner, and no attribution line you are obliged to leave in. **It is free for commercial use**, including work you bill a client for.

### Does this work on a phone?

Yes. The page tiles are sized to be tapped accurately rather than clicked with a mouse, and shift-click has a touch equivalent in the page list field, where typing 12-48 beats tapping thirty-seven tiles. Size is the thing to watch. A phone tab has far less memory to work with than a desktop one, so a very large scan may not survive the run.

### Does the original file get modified?

Never. **The file on your disk is opened for reading and is never written to at any point.** What you download is a separate new document, built from the pages you kept. Get the selection wrong and nothing is lost, because the original is still sitting on your disk exactly as it was, ready for another attempt.

## The rest of the PDF suite

All of these run the same way: your file is read by JavaScript on your own machine, the work happens on your processor, and the result is handed back to you as a download that never existed anywhere else.
