# AVIF to PDF Converter: Turn the newest and smallest image format into a document that opens on anything

Drop your AVIF files into the processing zone below and get a document back. **AVIF is the most efficient still image format in general use, and it is also the one most likely to be refused by the software your colleagues actually run.** The engine decodes the compressed AV1 frame in your browser, then writes it into the PDF as a JPEG. That is a format the specification can carry. Nothing is uploaded. The work runs on your own processor.

- Files never leave your device
- No installation, no watermark
- Works offline once the page is open

Convert AVIF images, Live

- **Privacy:** 100% private
- **Your plan:** Free to use
- **You get:** Single PDF

Your files are read by JavaScript running on your own machine. There is no upload, no queue, and no copy on our server to delete later.

The converter above is live and takes AVIF files right now. **The notes below cover what you trade away when you convert**: what an AVIF actually contains at the byte level, why no PDF reader can hold one, what happens to a 10-bit high dynamic range photograph when it is flattened for a document, and why the file you get back is certain to be larger than the one you dropped in.

## How to Convert AVIF Images to PDF Online for Free

Two minutes. Nothing to install, and no sign-up before your first conversion. This **pdf tools** utility runs inside the page you are reading, so the decode and the re-encode both happen on your own hardware.

1. **Load your AVIF files into the drop zone.** Use the drop zone above, or drag your AVIF files onto the page. Each file is probed as it lands. **If your browser has no AV1 decoder, the file is refused immediately rather than failing halfway through and handing you a blank page.** That check happens before you spend an operation.
2. **Set the page order.** The order of the cards on screen is the order of the pages you get. Reorder them by dragging. The sorter reads the digits in a filename as a number, so image 2 lands ahead of image 10 rather than somewhere after it.
3. **Choose how pixels become paper.** Pick A4 or US Letter and every image is scaled to fit inside the sheet. Pick Fit to image and the page is built to the physical size the image implies instead. Then set your margins.
4. **Convert, then check a gradient at full zoom.** Press Convert to PDF. The rendering happens on your machine. Open the result and look at one page at 100 percent zoom before you commit to a long batch. **Check a smooth sky or gradient first, because that is where the drop from 10-bit color to 8-bit shows up as visible banding.**

## The Engineering Reality: What is AVIF and Why Re-encode?

An AVIF is a single still frame of compressed AV1 video, stored inside an ISO base media file container. That is the same container family that holds MP4 files. **Open one in a hex editor and you find media boxes rather than image structures**: an `ftyp` brand declaration at byte 4, a `meta` box describing the payload, and an `mdat` holding the compressed frame itself.

That video heritage is where the efficiency comes from. AV1 uses variable block partitioning and directional filters that suppress the ringing JPEG leaves along hard edges, which is how it routinely lands a file at half the size of a comparable JPEG at the same visual quality.

It is also where the compatibility problem comes from. Displaying an AVIF needs a full *AV1 video decoder* plus a media container parser, not the simple image decoder that opens a JPEG. **That is why software which has handled JPEGs without complaint since 1995 still refuses an AVIF today.**

### Why a PDF cannot contain an AVIF natively

The PDF specification works from a closed set of image compression filters, and every reader on earth has to implement all of them. The list runs to DCTDecode for JPEG, FlateDecode for deflate-compressed data, JPXDecode for JPEG 2000 and a handful of fax codecs. **AV1 is not on it and is not going to be added.** Writing AV1 data into a PDF would produce a file no existing reader could open.

So this converter runs a real transcode. Your browser decodes the AV1 frame to raw pixels in memory, and those pixels are encoded as a JPEG, which is what the container understands. There is no passthrough route for AVIF and there cannot be one. Any tool claiming otherwise is describing something the format does not permit.

- **Container:** ISO base media file format, the same family as MP4 and HEIF
- **Coding:** A single AV1 intra frame, from the Alliance for Open Media
- **Bit depth:** 8, 10 or 12 bits per color channel
- **Color:** Wide gamut and high dynamic range transfer functions supported
- **Transparency:** Yes, stored as a separate alpha item inside the container
- **PDF support:** None, and none is planned

## The Cost of Conversion: Flattening 10-bit HDR Images

This matters if your AVIF files came off a recent flagship phone or a professional camera pipeline. It is also the part generic converters leave out.

AVIF stores 10 or 12 bits per channel and can declare a high dynamic range transfer function such as PQ or HLG, paired with a wide gamut like Rec. 2020. That combination is what makes a bright sky look genuinely bright on an OLED display instead of flat grey. It is a real advantage over JPEG. It is also the first thing this conversion spends.

**A PDF built by this tool carries none of that dynamic range.** The browser decodes your image onto a standard 8-bit sRGB canvas, tone-mapping the range and the gamut down as it goes, and it is that flattened result which gets encoded into the document. Highlight detail is compressed into the narrow band a printed page can express. Nothing downstream restores it.

For most business conversions this does not matter at all. The destination is a printed sheet or a document viewer, and neither reproduces high dynamic range anyway. Treat the PDF as a delivery copy and keep the AVIF as your master.

**Banding in a smooth sky is the visual tell.** If a gradient shows stepping in the PDF that was not there in the original, you converted a 10-bit image into an 8-bit document. That is expected behavior and it does not reverse. Keep the AVIF.

### What happens to AVIF transparency

AVIF stores transparency as a separate alpha item inside the container, and it stores it well. **It does not survive this conversion.** Photographic AVIF content is written into the PDF as a JPEG to keep the file size sane, and JPEG has no alpha channel, so every transparent area is filled with solid white. White rather than black is deliberate, because a logo that turns into a black rectangle on a printed page is the kind of error a client finds first. If you need the transparency, convert the AVIF to a PNG and run that through our [PNG to PDF](https://carthacker.com/pdf-tools/png-to-pdf/) tool instead.

## Expect the Output PDF to Be Larger Than Your AVIF

The file getting bigger surprises people. The arithmetic is doing exactly what it should. AVIF is built to be roughly twice as efficient as JPEG at the same visual quality, so converting into a format the PDF container will accept means handing all of that efficiency straight back. **A 400 KB AVIF routinely lands near a megabyte inside the document.**

There is a second cost, and it is generation loss. Your AVIF already went through a lossy AV1 encoder, so its fine high-frequency detail is gone and its compression artifacts are baked into the pixels. Encoding those baked-in artifacts again as a JPEG forces the encoder to spend bits describing damage the previous encoder did.

### Reducing the output size sensibly

1. Resize the raw pixels before converting. Pixel dimensions drive the whole file weight. A 12 megapixel photograph placed on an A4 page at 300 dpi is using a fraction of its pixels, and the rest is pure overhead inside the document.
2. Use a standard page size such as A4 or Letter rather than Fit to image. Letting a large photograph dictate the page size builds an enormous sheet that legacy viewers struggle with and office printers refuse outright.
3. Convert in sensible batches. A single 200 page PDF full of transcoded high resolution photographs is not a file anyone can reliably attach to an email.

Compressing the finished PDF afterwards is a waste of effort. The image data inside is already JPEG, and JPEG does not compress further without visible damage. **Any size reduction at that stage costs you a third generation of loss on top of the two already spent.**

## Batch Limits When Every File Needs Decoding

A few web assets convert in seconds. The cost shows up at volume, because an AVIF cannot be copied into the document the way a JPEG can: every file has to be fully decoded into an uncompressed bitmap, held in memory, and encoded again. Fifty high resolution images means fifty uncompressed bitmaps competing for the same tab.

Anonymous visitors get one operation every 12 hours, and a free CartHacker account raises that to two. Both cap a batch at 20 files or 100 MB. **CartHacker Premium drops the operation counter and lifts the ceiling to 100 files and 500 MB.** The files still never leave your machine at any tier.

## Zero-Trust Architecture: Your Data Never Touches the Cloud

The standard build for a **pdf converter online free** uploads your files to a server, processes them in a queue, and asks you to trust a privacy policy saying the copies get deleted. A policy is not a mechanism. It cannot survive an unsecured storage bucket, a retention schedule nobody audits, or a change of ownership.

This engine has no ingestion endpoint. The JavaScript on this page uses the browser File API to decode and re-encode your images on your own processor, then returns the result through a temporary object URL that lives in your tab and nowhere else. **No server takes part in the conversion, so there is no copy of your work to breach, subpoena or scrape.**

You can check that rather than believe it. Load the page, take the machine off the network, and drop a batch of AVIF files into the queue. It converts.

**Thirty seconds to prove it.** Open this page, turn off your wifi, drop in an AVIF and press convert. A tool that relied on cloud processing would fail on the spot. This one hands you the finished PDF.

The only packet that reaches us is the operation counter enforcing the free tier limit. It records that a conversion ran, and when. **It never receives your file, your file names, or anything derived from the contents.**

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does converting AVIF to PDF reduce my image quality?

Yes, it costs one re-encoding generation and there is no way around it. **The PDF specification has no filter that can carry AV1 video data**, so the image has to be decoded and written again as a JPEG. At normal document viewing sizes the difference is hard to see. It becomes obvious when the source was a 10-bit high dynamic range file, because flattening to 8-bit sRGB can produce visible banding in smooth gradients.

### Why can a PDF not just contain the AVIF file directly?

Because an AVIF is an AV1 video frame wrapped in an ISO base media container, and PDF works from a closed set of legacy image filters that every reader must implement, such as DCTDecode for JPEG and FlateDecode for PNG. **AV1 is not among them.** A PDF carrying AV1 data would be unopenable in every reader currently in existence.

### Why is my output PDF larger than my source AVIF files?

Because AVIF is roughly twice as efficient as JPEG at the same visual quality, and the PDF container obliges you to store the image as a JPEG. **Giving up that efficiency is the price of a file everyone can open.** A 400 KB AVIF commonly arrives near a megabyte inside the document.

### What happens to 10-bit HDR and wide gamut colors?

They are tone-mapped down. Your browser decodes the AVIF onto an 8-bit sRGB canvas, compressing the dynamic range and the gamut as it does so, and that flattened output is what reaches the document. **Standard PDF viewers and office printers cannot reproduce high dynamic range anyway**, so for a delivery copy this is the correct behavior. Keep the AVIF as your master.

### Will the transparent background in my AVIF survive?

No. AVIF stores an alpha channel properly, as a separate item in the container, but the image is written into the PDF as a JPEG to keep the file size reasonable, and **JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled with solid white**. If you need the transparency, convert the AVIF to a PNG first and run that through our [PNG to PDF](https://carthacker.com/pdf-tools/png-to-pdf/) tool.

### My browser says it cannot read my AVIF file. What now?

The conversion depends on your browser having its own AV1 decoder, because all of the decoding happens locally rather than on a server that could do it for you. Current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari ship one; older builds and locked-down corporate machines often do not. **The engine refuses the file up front rather than handing you a blank page.** Updating the browser is the fix.

### Are my confidential files uploaded to a remote server?

No. This online pdf editor runs inside your browser on your local CPU, and **there is no upload endpoint in the code for a file to reach**. Your images are never transmitted. That makes it a sound choice for unreleased product renders, architectural work and anything under an NDA.

### How do I combine multiple AVIF images into a single PDF document?

Drop the whole batch in at once and leave Merge all images into one PDF switched on. **The engine puts one image on each page, following the order of the cards on screen.** Drag the cards to change the pagination before you convert.

### Can I convert an animated AVIF file?

You will get the first frame only. A PDF page is static and has nowhere to put a timeline. Animated AVIF files use the avis brand tag and are uncommon, but if yours holds several frames **the remaining frames are dropped without a separate warning on the card**. Export the frames as individual images first if you need all of them.

### Can I process batches of 100 images at once?

Anonymous visitors get one operation every 12 hours and free accounts get two, with both capped at 20 files or 100 MB per batch, because holding that many uncompressed bitmaps exhausts a browser tab. **CartHacker Premium removes the operation counter and raises the ceiling to 100 files and 500 MB.**

## The rest of the PDF suite

All of these run the same way: your file is read by JavaScript on your own machine, the work happens on your processor, and the result is handed back to you as a download that never existed anywhere else.
